All India Institute of Medical Sciences
All-India Institute of Medical Sciences was established as an institution of national importance by an Act of Parliament with the objects to develop patterns of teaching in Undergraduate and Post-graduate Medical Education in all its branches so as to demonstrate a high standard of Medical Education in India; to bring together in one place educational facilities of the highest order for the training of personnel in all important branches of health activity; and to attain self-sufficiency in Post-graduate Medical Education.
The Institute has comprehensive facilities for teaching, research and patient-care. Teaching and research are conducted in 42 disciplines. In the field of medical research AIIMS leads with more than 600 research publications by its faculty and researchers in a year. Twenty-five clinical departments including four super specialty centers manage practically all types of disease conditions with support from pre- and Para-clinical departments. AIIMS also manages a 60-beded hospital in the Comprehensive Rural Health Centre at Ballabgarh in Haryana and provides health cover to about 2.5 lakh population through the Centre for Community Medicine.
Year of Establishment:
AIIMS was inaugurated in 1956, and was built with a grant from the New Zealand Government. AIIMS was established in New Delhi after former Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s initial proposal to set up the institute in Calcutta was turned down by the then Chief Minister of West Bengal Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy.
It was the vision of Rajkumari Amrit Kaur, the first Health Minister of India, to establish an institute of such nature in India. She envisioned an autonomous medical institute where students, doctors and teachers would live and learn side by side, with freedom to experiment with teaching and curriculum.

Facilities:
AIIMS is a residential university where the faculty members, staff and students live on either the main campus or one of the several campuses which form a part of the Institution.
Hostels
There are five hostels for men undergraduate students (Hostel No.1-5) and a single hostel available for women undergraduate students (Hostel 10). These six hostels together can accommodate 850 students. For Post-graduate students, there are three hostels available for the men students and married couples(Hostel No.6-8) and a single hostel for the women students(Hostel No.9). Additional hostels for Nursing students and Post-graduate students are available at a facility in the Masjid Moth area, situated near to the main AIIMS campus. Hostels for MBBS/ MD / nursing students are also located at Ballabgarh, Dayalpur and Chainsa used during Ballabgarh posting.
Library
The information needs of the faculty, students and research workers are met by the library which came into existence in 1957 and grew parallel to the development of the Institute. Originally accommodated on the ground floor of the pre-clinical block, this library was shifted to its present premises in 1973 and was named as B.B. Dikshit Library after the name of the founder director of the Institute.
The Library building consists of two floors with a carpet area of 27000 square feet and seating capacity of 300 persons. Because of the unique contribution made by Dr. John F. Fulton, Rajkumari Amrit Kaur, Maj. Gen. Amir Chand and AIIMSONIANS of America, four different sections of the library have been named after them. For the benefit of the undergraduate medical students, a benevolent donation made by a philanthropist has made possible the setting of a Book Bank. Since August, 2003 the library remains open round the clock, seven days a week including Sundays and holidays except national holidays. Its present collection consists of 71,496 books, 66496 bound journals, 5059 thesis and 16805 pamphlets. The library is currently subscribed to 633 journals
Computer Facility
Computer Facility was created in the institute in 1978 as unit in the Department of Biophysics. At the point, computerization was on a small scale and was catering only to Biophysics. In 1987, the institute decided to augment the facility and Computer Facility was created and became operational in full scale in Jan’1989. This facility is engaged in teaching, research, thesis guidance and computerization of patient care activities.

NOTE:
| 1. | The fee and other charges including hostel rent once paid shall not be refunded even if a student leaves the Institute for any reason. No correspondence in this matter shall be entertained. |
| 2. | The caution money and mess security will, however, be refunded to those candidates who do not join the course. In case of a student, who leaves the course in the middle or after the completion of the course, the balance of caution money and mess security, if any, after deduction of the charges due, will be refunded. |
| 3. | The fees are payable in two equal instalments by the 4th August and 4th February each year. The Dean/Director at his/her discretion may allow 15 days time after due dates aforesaid, to any student for making payment of fees etc. If the fees and other dues are not paid by the stipulated date, a fine of Re.1/- per day shall be charged. Besides, on default, the Dear/ Director may impose such penalty as he/she considers necessary on merits of each case. |
How to get into AIIMS?
Undergraduate:
Admission is done on the basis of candidate’s performance in the entrance test followed a counseling conducted by the institute.
Nursing: Admission is done on the basis of candidate’s performance in the competitive entrance examination followed by Personal Assessment / Interview.
Post Graduate:
Admission is done on the basis of the merit obtained by the candidate in the entrance test followed by counseling.
How Many Seats?
Each year 50 seats are available for admission to the graduate medical course, leading to the award of the degree of M.B.B.S. of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences. Out of these, 7 (seven) seats are reserved for the Scheduled Castes, 4 (four) seats are reserved for the Tribes Scheduled and 5 (five) seats are reserved for the Foreign Nationals nominated by the Government of India. The remaining 34(thirty four) seats are filled by the general candidates on the basis of a competitive examination.
If requisite number of suitable candidates are not available to fill the seats reserved for the Scheduled Castes, the same are filled out of the candidates belonging to the Scheduled Tribes and vice versa. In case suitable candidates are not available from the above two reserved categories, the vacant seats are filled by the candidates from the general category.
