Bangalore Medical College, located on Shri Krishnarajendra Road near the City Market in Bangalore, is run by the government of Karnataka. It is the only government medical college in Bangalore and one of six in Karnataka. (The others are in Mysore, Hubli-Dharwad, and Bellary along with two new government colleges starting from this new academic year Raichur and Mandya.) Admission to the college is extremely competitive through national and state level entrance tests. It has been consistently ranked among the top ten medical colleges in India. It was ranked number 8 in 2006.

It was established in 1955 by Dr. Shivram and Dr. Mekhri in what was then the fort police station ground. The college was subsequently handed over to the government for management. From its inception, the college has been associated with some of the most eminent doctors in India. It celebrated its golden jubilee in 2005-2006 with major renovation and the inaugration of a state of the art digital library and conference hall.

The teaching hospitals attached to the institution are the general hospitals Vicatoria Hospita, Bowring & Lady Curzon Hospital, Vanivilas Women & Children Hospital & Minto Hospital. Apart from this, it is involved in community health facilities like the Urban family welfare center on Siddaiah road and primary health centers in Pavgada, Sundekoppa, K. G. Halli and Hessarghatta. Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute (Deemed University) had its inception in the year 1985 as a private not-for-profit self-financing institution, and it was dedicated to serve the society as a centre of excellence with emphasis on medical education, research and health care. In view of its academic excellence, the Government of India granted the status of Deemed University to Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute in September 1994 under the provisions of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956.

The Deemed University has been established by Sri Ramachandra Educational & Health Trust. The Trust achieved the task of establishing this Institute as a “Centre of Excellence” under the leadership of Late Shri.N.P.V.Ramasamy Udayar who was the Founder & Managing Trustee of the Trust and also the first Chancellor of the Deemed University. Shri. V.R.Venkatachalam is currently the Chancellor and also the Managing Trustee of the Trust.

The objective of the institution is to have the facility raised and developed to a level comparable to any major medical establishment in advanced countries. With this goal in mind, the Trust, in close co-operation of and guidance from professional experts in administration and teaching, has developed this sprawling 175 acres green campus to a level of a prestigious University today. Osmania Medical College was established in 1846 and is one of the oldest medical educational institutes in the world. Located in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, the college is presently affiliated to NTR University of Health Sciences, while it was previously affiliated to the Osmania University of Hyderabad. The college is also recognized by Medical Council of India.

Osmania Medical College Hyderabad is the only educational institution in India (and possibly the world), where every medical specialty has a separate training hospital. It is also the lone medical college in south India to offer a postgraduate course in Endocrinology. Initially, the college was called the Nizam’s Medical School in 1846. Later in 1920, the medical school was transformed into a medical college.
